About:

Earth Rebel

Hi, my name is Diane and I am the creator and owner of Earth Rebel Fermentary

If you just go with the flow, life really does guide you to where you need to be. Always. It sends you gifts along the way and it’s up to you to take them and make the most of what it is.

What started as a small gift, turned into a life-changing, semi-obsessive, all consuming lifestyle…and business. If you ask anyone who is a fermenter, they’d say the same things. It’s addictive. You try ferment everything and you develope this deep fascination and love for the whole process. It really does change your life.

A friend gifted me a little kombucha scoby in 2014. He loved the drink and knowing I was into health stuff, he swore by it’s amazing health benefits. Needless to say, 4 weeks later I was hooked. I was so intrigued by the ability to create such an ancient healthy elixer from basic ingredients. The kids loved it (THAT is a biggie!) and not long after, I was bottling and selling to  our local deli.

In 2017 my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. (I’m going to skip all the drama and keep it short.) He decided to treat it alternatively (didn’t really have much of a choice) which included, amongst many other protocols, a strict vegan diet and here come the cool part. That little gifted scoby encouraged me to want to research other fermented foods to feed him. I spent weeks, MONTHS reading every article I could find, and as many different kinds of fermented foods as I could google. There is an ocean of culture info out there. I started making a variety of fermented foods and included it in our daily meals (We were in such great shape!).

I’m in no way saying fermented foods cure cancer, BUT it was a huge contributing factor to maintaining his healthy immune system. It also gave me sense of purpose and that I could play a positive part in his healing. This is where Earth Rebel was born. And soon after that I was supplying that same little Deli with foods.

We also shared a passion for going off-grid (which we are now!) and being as self-sufficient as possible and fermented foods is such a huge part of that. It’s an essential part of this lifestyle of preserving foods and using as much of the harvest as possible to avoid food waste. As cliché’d and as ‘hippyfied’ as this way of life sounds (it’s trending big-time right now BTW), it really is the way of our future and the only way to avoid another pandemic and system collapse.

Earth Rebel is a lifestyle. It’s so much more than just a business. My passion for fermentation is what I sell, but it’s also my daily life that I share to inspire and motivate others to make changes in their own lives. It’s how I unschool my kids and how we turned our 1400m2 plot into an urban farm. It’s about growing our own food, supporting other local businesses, making our own medicine and lowering our carbon footprint. Supporting thrift and second hand shops, upcycling, doing without, repurposing, trading, batering, sharing and the possibilties go on and on.

Changing how we live, eat and do business is the ONLY way forward.

Ps. Hubby is cancer free and doing well.
